A saying of the Buddha's is "Tadyata gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha" (It is thus: proceed, proceed, proceed beyond, thoroughly proceed beyond, be founded in enlightenment). This is in reference to going through the five paths from our human nature to to our true spiritual nature. These paths are the path of accumulation, the path of preparation, the path of seeing, the path of meditation, the path of no more learning.
Clearly the emphasis is on proceeding, going through it, or pressing on. Look at the first path. It's on the path of accumulating. We can spend all our lives accumulating, collecting things and people and jobs but they will never fulfill us. They can never give us inner peace. So we must press through that thinking or proceed beyond it and live simply. When we simplify, then we can see a clearer world and notice the true beauty of our world.
I long for the day when we can live with less stuff and possess more peace.
