The List

On this World AIDS Day, I thought I'd re-share The List. It's not the definitive list of people who have died of AIDS. It's hardly a drop in the bucket, but it's a drop that has affected so many of us who remain and miss our loved ones, children, lovers, coworkers, siblings, parents, teachers, neighbors and friends.  

Since the outbreak of AIDS in 1981, over 25 million men, women and children have been taken from us. Where would they be if they had lived? How would the world be if they had not been taken from us? How would each of our lives be different if they had lived?

 

This is the true cost to this continuing pandemic. We all talk in dollars and cents and statistics but it's the millions of great contributions to humanity that we have been robbed of.

 

My intention for The List is to raise awareness of the impact that we still experience from the AIDS pandemic and to tie together the battle against AIDS and the human rights movement. For too many of us, the battle for equality are a whole separate issue from the war on AIDS. But what good is equality to the dead? And consider how much our movement has suffered by losing so many human rights activists, leaders and heroes in big and small ways.
